Piedechinche (site briefing)

Piedechinche (site briefing)

Colombia

Piedechinche is often described as the "friendlier sister" to Roldanillo. Located in the southern part of the Valle del Cauca near the town of Santa Elena, it is world-renowned for its consistent, mellow conditions, making it the top choice for pilots looking to build confidence, practice thermalling, or enjoy "glass-off" evening soaring.

Location & Culture

Piedechinche is centered around the small, welcoming town of Santa Elena (part of the El Cerrito municipality). The culture is laid-back and deeply intertwined with paragliding. Unlike the bustling competition vibe of Roldanillo, Piedechinche feels like a dedicated flying resort area. The valley floor is dominated by sugarcane plantations and historical haciendas, most notably the Hacienda El Paraíso.

Major Paragliding Launches

Launches are manicured grassy slopes. Transport typically departs from the Dédalos Fly House or the Siga La Vaca area in 4x4 trucks.

Launch Name Altitude (MSL) Google Maps Link Notes
Siete (Seven) ~1,750m The most popular and largest launch. Easy, grassy, and fits many wings.
Bello Horizonte ~1,700m Google Maps Private site slightly lower than Siete; known for its own organized transport.
Paraíso del Vuelo ~1,750m Google Maps Near the Hacienda El Paraíso; excellent facilities and often used for tandems.

Major Landing Zones (LZ)

The landing areas in Piedechinche are exceptionally large and beginner-friendly.

Landing Zone Google Maps Link Notes
Dédalos LZ Google Maps The primary hub. Huge field with an on-site restaurant and pool.
Siga La Vaca Google Maps Popular LZ near a well-known restaurant; very reliable for evening "magic air."
Hacienda El Paraíso Google Maps Used mainly by pilots launching from the Paraíso site.

Hazards & Difficulties

  • Restricted Airspace: Piedechinche is closer to Cali's international airport. Local agreements allow flying, but there are strict boundaries you must not cross. Always get a briefing from local schools (like Colombia Paragliding) regarding these "no-fly" zones.
  • The "Black Bugs": Small gnats (jejenes) at launch can be relentless. Many pilots wear long sleeves even in the heat to avoid bites that can cause itchy allergic reactions.
  • Sugarcane "Knives": If you land out in the valley, avoid the standing sugarcane. The leaves are sharp enough to cut skin and expensive glider fabric. Only land in harvested fields or the dirt tracks between them

Recommended Experience

  • Level: P2 (Beginner-Intermediate) to Expert.
  • Why: It is arguably the best site in Colombia for a pilot’s first thermal or XC flight. The thermals are typically wide and consistent (+2 to +4 m/s) rather than sharp and turbulent.

Accommodations & Dining

Where Pilots Stay:

  • Dédalos Fly House: The most famous "pilot house" in the area. It’s located directly at the main LZ and serves as the social and logistical heart of the site.
  • Hotel Restaurante La Azotea: A more modern option with a pool and great views, popular for its comfort.
  • Siga La Vaca: Offers both rooms and a famous restaurant; very convenient for those who want to "top land" or land nearby.
  • Bello Horizonte: Offers eco-cabins right on the mountainside for those who want to stay at launch.

Recommended Restaurants:

  • Siga La Vaca: Famous for its "Chuleta Valluna" (breaded pork) and large portions.
  • Dédalos Restaurant: The standard for quick post-flight meals and beers.
  • Juice Stands in Santa Elena: Don't miss the fresh Lulada or Guanabana juices in the town square.

Seasonality (Best time to visit)

  • Peak Season (Dec – March): The driest months and best for long XC flights into the valley.
  • Second Season (July – August): Excellent flying, often with slightly stronger conditions.
