Roldanillo (site briefing)
Roldanillo (site briefing)
Colombia
Roldanillo, located in the Valle del Cauca, is widely considered one of the world's premier winter paragliding destinations. It offers a unique combination of reliable flatland flying and ridge soaring, making it a "textbook" site for cross-country (XC) progression.
Location & Culture
Roldanillo is a "Pueblo Mágico" (Magical Town) known for its vibrant street art, friendly locals, and a deep-rooted paragliding culture. The town sits at the base of the Cordillera Occidental, overlooking a vast agricultural valley primarily filled with sugarcane.

Hazards & Difficulties
- Pacific Sea Breeze: The most critical hazard. Around 1:00 PM–3:00 PM, a strong wind from the Pacific often spills over the mountains. This creates severe rotor/turbulence on the western ridge. Pilots are advised to move into the valley or toward the eastern ridge by early afternoon.
- Power Lines: High-voltage lines run along the western ridge below launch. Smaller cables are common throughout the valley and can be difficult to see when landing in fields.
- Sugar Cane Fires: Farmers frequently burn fields. While these create strong thermals, the air can be extremely turbulent and the smoke can reduce visibility.
-
Backwind at Launch: Morning conditions can sometimes feature a "false headwind" or backwind. Never launch until an upslope thermal breeze is clearly established.
Recommended Experience
- Level: Autonomous P3 (Intermediate) or higher.
- Skills: You should be comfortable with active piloting in thermic conditions and landing in tight or un-manicured areas. While the air is often "friendly," the mid-day thermals (typically +3 to +5 m/s) require focused wing management.
Accommodations & Dining
Where Pilots Stay
- Cloudbase Colombia: A hub for international pilots, offering rooms and paragliding-specific services.
- Hotel Casa Volga: Located right on the main square; popular for its rooftop breakfast and modern rooms.
- Hotel Cocli: Well-regarded for safety and customer service.
- Arte y Viento: Located near the Rayo Museum, offering a quieter, pilot-friendly atmosphere.

Seasonality (Best Times to Visit)
Roldanillo offers two primary seasons for flying:
- December – March (Primary Season): The absolute best for XC and competitions. Cloudbase is high, and flying is possible almost every day.
- July – September (Secondary Season): Also excellent, often featuring slightly stronger thermals and very consistent conditions.
